Today we are celebrating women, all of them!
"All around the world, International Women's Day represents an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women while calling for greater equality."
This year & every year, we support International Women's Day (#IWD2015) because it is a day that brings to light efforts that are striving to promote opportunities for women & gender equality, as well as celebrating women's accomplishments over the past year & acknowledge that there is still work to be done to achieve equal rights for women across the planet.
This is something Anchal & the Artisan Program strives to do everyday for women in India.
From providing them with sustainable employment with a fair and competitive wages to offering them workshops in design principles, stress management, financial planning, leadership to entrepreneurship & providing them with health care services, all of our efforts strive to elevate the status of women within their families & ensure a better life of them & their families. Though the process takes time & can be arduous - it is worth it. Time & time again we hear from Jaimala & the artisans themselves telling us stories of being empowered and leaving behind a life in the commercial sex industry.
"Some of them are now earning MORE than their husbands and they feel very proud of it!"
"I was supposed to seek approval & be granted permission; but now ... they look up to me when it is a time to make a decision. They obey me, listen to my views and follow what I suggest."
It is only but some of the artisans' sentiments & it is because of this, we know we're #makingithappen!
Yet, there is still work to be done to promote greater equality for the Artisans in India & for all women around the world & it's going to take all of us to continue to #makeithappen.
This is what you can do TODAY to support Anchal & International Women's Day. Donate to the Artisan Program, sponsor one of Anchal's Artisans, or share our post about #IWD2015 on Facebook or Instagram!
