DESIGNING SOLUTIONS FOR GLOBAL NEEDS
1. Women's Exploitation
“Before Anchal there was no charm or challenge in life to achieve anything. Life was dragging and we thought that commercial sex work was our fate.”
The societal inequalities produced due to unequal access to education and employment opportunities especially target poor women around the world. Often, these inequalities create circumstances that force women and girls to rely on the commercial sex trade to support themselves and their families.
The United Nations estimates there are 40 MILLION commercial sex workers worldwide & 10 MILLION in India alone.
Commercial sex workers in India are stigmatized and marginalized from society. They are forced into the commercial sex trade due to poverty, lack of education, limited skills and extreme gender inequality. No matter how a woman enters the trade, the woman becomes trapped in a vicious cycle leaving a lasting imprint on her future and her children’s future.
85% of Anchal artisans joined the commercial sex trade due to a lack of alternatives.
Evidence proves that economically empowering women can transform the trajectory of entire families and lead to widespread economic growth. Anchal believes investing in a female commercial sex worker, especially one with children, is an opportunity that can transform an entire family and in turn, society. Anchal recognizes both the need for innovative solutions to tackle this global need and the power of design to solve these inequalities currently through two projects.
2. Industrialized Textiles System
The rise of “fast fashion” has made the global textile and apparel industry one of the most resource-intensive industries in the world – resulting in toxic pollution, unethical labor practices and mounting waste.
Globally, humans consume about 80 billion new pieces of clothing every year, which is 400% more than the amount we consumed just 20 years ago. With the rise of consumption comes an alarming rate of discarded clothing. The average American now generates 82 pounds of textile waste annually, totaling more than 11 million tons. In addition, the textile industry is the 2nd largest polluter on the planet followed by oil. The harsh chemicals released during industrial dyeing damages aquatic systems and make drinking water dangerous.
Anchal believes that by sourcing recycled material, organic fibers, natural dyes, alongside creating quality handcrafted textiles, together we can begin to offset the damage to people and our planet.
