Slavery did not end with the abolition in 1865. Actually, with 28.9 million slaves worldwide there are more slaves today than ever. Of the 28.9 million slaves, 14 million are found in India.
The term "modern slavery" refers to multiple forms of work that are forced by mental or physical threats. This includes forced labor, bonded labor and trafficking. According to antislavery.org someone is considered a slave if they are forced to work, owned or controlled by their employer, treated as a commodity, or is physically constrained against their will. Sex trafficking, which is one of Anchal's focuses, involves more than one element on this list.
What are we doing to help? It is Anchal's mission to free women in India from modern slavery and provide them with a stable alternative career in textiles. By having an income, education and health benefits, Anchal artisans are able to stay our of the sex industry and avoid the threat of their children entering the trade. Anchal is the catalyst of change for the lives of women in India for generations to come.
With your support of Anchal and other anti-slavery movements, we will end slavery, once and for all! #designingchange #stitchbystitch
